The Bruised Thistle is about two lost souls who have both been through more then any human being should be allowed they both feel lost, violated, destroyed, alone and betrayed and have major issues with trust.
The heroine of this story is about Iseabail MacNaughton who is orphaned along with her two brothers Iain and Callum who are orphaned. Then an Uncle Henry her deceased father's the former Laird's brother comes to claim the title and lands from them basically making himself their ward and protector. Yet for three years now this Uncle had not taken proper care of the castle, land and worse oh all he not only neglects them he is also their abuser as well as warden.The three wards are not allowed to go out or have visitors basically making them prisoner in their family home. He is an evil, abusive and beats the boys and molests his very own niece repeatedly. Of course the brothers are not aware of Isabael's shame and all she has to endure . Although Uncle Henry does keep her a virgin to sell her to the highest bidder. Iain comes up with a plan of escape where he stays behind and says he will meet his sister and little brother after he sends them in the woods to be safe and for them to get help. Well what do the say about best laid plans? It doesn't always go the way you would hope.
The weather dips into freezing temperatures so Callum and Iseabail try to stay unnoticed not realizing the dangers of the world being orphaned and imprisoned. It has been two months and still no sign of their father's heir Iain! Iseabail go to this house for warmth and food run by evil self serving mercenaries where Iseabail tries to disguise herself as a lad. Yet someone watches her and mistakes her for a whore as well and tries to drag her away to have his wicked way with her!
This is when the hero of the book Seumas MacDonell shows up. He is now a mercenary as he feel he is not good enough for any one due to his past with the crusades when crusades had turned bad and were acting like savages destroying and ravaging innocents. Although he never participated in these disgusting acts he lives with much guilt nit being able to do anything but turn away,It was not what he sent out to do and it had destroyed him mentally as well as physically. He won't return to his family or friends living with so much guilt and disgust at himself and the man he had become or as he puts it half the man he'd become due to an injury he received in his groin making him inpotent .
He saves Iseabail from nearly being violated and decides to leave the mercenary life and become her and her brothers protector, but the one thing he wants is trust and she cannot seem to make it and seems to trust all the wrong people. He doesn't know there is a price one her head for her return from her lecherous Uncle who will kill and murder for her return.
The attraction between Seumus and Iseabail is instant they both think the other is not good enough due to so many emotional scars they both have had to endure. Seumus once dreamed of marriage with children he would love but due to his injury that freak has died and Iseabail feels she is ruined and no man would want her after he know all the horrible acts she was forced to perform for her Uncle,
Will Iseabail be the one to save Seumas from his gruesome past or will she move on leaving him in the dust still a broken man? Will Seumas be able to look past what Iseabail considers her soiled past? Or will he look at her with disgust in his eyes and abandon her? Will Iseabail ever be able to confess everything to Seumas as she was told to trust no one from her brother Iain before she began this journey? It is obvious they are attracted and care for one another even with unsaid words but is it enough? You must read this enchanting book and find out! It is truly a wonderful exhilarating read!
This book will bring out so many emotions in the reader as you will laugh at some parts, but many parts will just break your heart and make you cry. It has a bit of everything in this dazzling read: adventure, history, grief, treachery, mystery, suspense, betrayal, trust, unrequited love, revenge, romance and of course love. For me this makes it a truly utterly magnificent read in my opinion and this is only Ms.York's debut. I look forward to more wonderful reads from this talented author in the future.

What a charming love story. A strong handsome highlander rescues a young women who has been subjected to sexual abuse by her greedy uncle. Add a charming little boy who names the bunny that was "suppose" to be dinner, and a monastery full of monks who set up a bridal suite, and you get a book with many smiles, as well as tears.
I am going to check if Ms. York has finished another book for me to curl up with.
THE BRUISED THISTLE is a Scottish historical romance with strong characters you can root for, adventure, and a terrific love story. Iseabail and Seumas both have wounds from their past, but together, they learn to trust and allow love to bond them together. Ashley York brings their world alive with historical details and a feel for the setting, and the characters are endearing in a satisfying love story.
I loved this story. The other reviews were correct, I was unable to put this book down, read it in one day. There was so much more to this story than just romance, iseabail's relationships with her brothers, her past abuse & healing. Seumas's past haunts, physically & emotionally, his faith & ability to forgive himself. I can't wait to read the next book to see what Ian's story will be. Hopefully the mysterious man at the end was Ian?
I highly recommend reading this Scottish Romance. You will enjoy this book as much as I did. It is a story full of adventure, romance, laughter and tears.. Absolutely loved Seumas and Iseabail. Seumas is running away from himself and Iseabail is on the run with a price on her head. This is Ashley York's 1st book and I can't wait for the 2nd and 3rd in the series to come out. Keep them coming.
Writer Ashley York brings it all to the table in her work The Bruised Thistle with a swoon worthy hero, a gutsy heroine and hands down the best villains currently lurking in historical romance. This wonderfully written tale set in Medieval Scotland takes its audience on a reading experience filled with subterfuge, moral dilemmas and breathtaking desire. Do not plan on doing anything else once you open up an Ashley York novel!

Ashley York takes you on a roller coaster of emotions. You'll be rooting for Seumas and Iseabail all the way through, but be sure to have the tissues ready. It's a great book, and I recommend it to all who love a good Scottish historical romance.
